Ultrasonic Testing

An engine is a precision machine where all components must be precise to ensure all mechanical functions operate correctly and the engine runs smoothly.

An engine is a precision machine where all components must be precise to ensure all mechanical functions operate correctly and the engine runs smoothly.  However, an engine consists of many inacessible areas where tools of measurement are simply unable to reach.  One such example is the cylinder bore, which is a vital component of an engine.

The combustion which occurs inside the bore puts the walls under extreme pressure.  When rebuilding an engine, to ensure reliability of the engine, we need to determine whether the walls are of the correct thickness to be able to withstand these pressures.  An engine being rebuilt has been subjected to wear and tear, which in some cases will have worn down the walls and can lead to the development of imperfections.  Do the bores require re-sleeving? The problem is, how do we know how to find the thickness of the wall and determine whether the wall is thinner in certain points?  A mechanical instrument for measurement cannot provide this information, as we would have to split the block open to find out.  We face many similar problems when rebuilding an engine as there is a lot of "blind material" which is unable to be measured using traditional methods.

The advancement of technology has given us Ultrasonic Testing.  This specialised method efficiently provides a very accurate measurement of blind material.

A sound wave which is beyond our level of hearing (ultrasonic) is sent into the component to be tested.  The signal is relected back and the vibrations received can detect the material thickness at that point.

At Galloway Engines, we believe quality machining can only be achieved on quality machines.  Since 1978, we have had a continuous equipment update policy to ensure we are at the forefront of engine machining technology.  Although our policy can be expensive, it runs in line with our desire to be the best and ensures our customers get the best reconditioned engine available.
